Watch Our Feature

You can watch the full NBC 26 segment here: Fox River Hurling Club on NBC 26

Bringing Ancient Tradition to Wisconsin

The feature beautifully captures what makes hurling so special. As Ireland's national sport with over 3,000 years of history, hurling represents one of the oldest field games in the world. Yet despite its ancient roots, it remains dynamic, fast-paced, and incredibly exciting to play.

Understanding the Game

For those new to the sport, the NBC 26 piece provides a great introduction to hurling's basics. The game features positions similar to soccer, making it somewhat familiar to American sports fans. Players use a wooden stick called a hurly to control and strike the slitter (the ball), creating a unique blend of skill, speed, and athleticism.

The rules add to the sport's challenge and excitement. Players can only hold the slitter for four seconds or take four steps with it—unless they're "soloing," which involves balancing the ball on the hurly while running. Scoring offers two options: send the ball through the uprights for one point, or into the goal for three points, creating strategic gameplay that keeps every moment engaging.

A Welcoming Community

One of the most important messages from our NBC 26 feature is that the Fox River Hurling Club welcomes everyone, regardless of experience level. Yes, picking up the slitter off the ground can be tricky at first—it's one of those skills that takes practice—but our club prides itself on creating a supportive, friendly environment where new players can learn at their own pace.

Whether you've never held a hurly before or you're looking to reconnect with the sport, you'll find a welcoming group of players ready to help you develop your skills and enjoy the game.

Growing the Next Generation

We're especially proud that the feature highlighted our youth program. Having recently held our first kids' practice, we're excited to introduce young people to hurling and help grow the sport in our community. There's something special about watching children discover this ancient game and develop new skills while having fun and making friends.
